Serotonin Personality: Everything you need to know.

Writer's picture: Lajia ShahLajia Shah

Serotonin-dominant people are usually fun, playful, and live-in-the-moment kind. You are realistic, exceptionally self-assured, very keen to do anything fun, can be impulsive at times, and don’t take criticism very well even if deep down you know the other person is right. You are super friendly and flirtatious without even realizing it. You get past strangers and make new friends everywhere you go.

Enjoyment is your life motto: getting things done, excelling both at school, work, and social life equally well. I know, right. All the rest of us somehow envy your nature, how do you manage all that?? when we hardly get through our day. You wake up annoyingly super energetic because let’s face it GABA, acetylcholine, and dopamine nature, all need some time in the morning to get back to the senses we are not machines like you. Please be gentle with us in the morning, I’m talking to you Naz (*wink wink).

Multitasking is your forte, getting things done, work is play to you and if a work or a task doesn’t excite you enough you’ll probably never do it. You are in touch with both mental and physical health. Professional athletes, movie stars, fashion models, plastic surgeons, orthopedics, and physical therapists mostly belong to this group. Where there is excitement, you’re there. Parties, celebrations, video games, dancing, running, and swimming are your favorite things. Adventures of all kinds, scuba diving, mountain climbing, river rafting, and horse riding are the sort of stuff you live for.

You like the idea of relationships but value your freedom equally. You are the life of every party, super fun, playful, cheerful, and easygoing. You want everyone to join in the fun. You adore children, you may not have your own children, but you are the favorite aunt/uncle of all the children in the family.

Too much Serotonin

Although serotonin is a happy hormone, having too much serotonin often makes you nervous. You respond badly often aggressively and get defensive over a little criticism. You dread the fear that people will dislike you which turns into this self-protective borderline aggression.

Serotonin deficiency

Since your brain functions at high energy most of the time, lack of sleep can often cause overutilization or burnout of serotonin. And without adequate sleep you don’t feel your best, it could be due to increased excitement in life or reduced sleep due to an increased workload.

With the continued low levels of acetylcholine, mentally you feel this friction to connect to people and socialize, which used to come easily to you before. The chart below will provide a brief overview of the symptoms associated with dopamine deficiency.

An impaired Serotonin level starts showing symptoms in the form of the lack of excitement in the activities you used to love, work and social life feels like a chore to you. You don’t enjoy your favorite food and try to compensate for the flavor with Chips and Cola. You feel this heavy feeling in your chest, your sleep is totally disturbed, and with that comes acne on the face.

With the continued low levels of serotonin mentally you feel exhausted and physically your health took a tool with a few extra kilos around your face. It’s time to make some adjustments in your lifestyle and diet before it gets too late.

Treatment Options

When you’ve figured out the deficiency the next step is to treat the problem. Dr. Eric Shares seven treatment options for treating dopamine deficiency including, medication, hormones, supplements, diet, lifestyle, environmental and electrical treatment.

It depends on the symptoms you are experiencing; memory loss and lethargy are usually the main concern. Solving both sleep and weight gain issues through diet and lifestyle is the priority.

Dietary changes include adding tryptophan, back into your diet through food and supplements. Tryptophan is usually found in cheese, chicken, chocolate, eggs, oatmeal, yogurt, and turkey. Lifestyle changes include adding cardio exercise to your routine as it produces a significant amount of serotonin.

With your enhanced senses it is highly recommended that you engage in some form of spiritual practice whether it being prayer 5 times a day, yoga, meditation or even singing or listening to music.

Remember your serotonin is your biggest strength, keeping in touch with your body and soul will keep you in shape both mentally and physically.
